housefly pupae refrigeration?

lemarko Sep 25, 2005 07:54 PM

My idea is to obtain (raise or get from local rendering facility) a large quantity of housefly maggots/larvae and let them pupate, then refrigerate them to induce dormancy through the winter and occasionally remove them for hatching and feeding. I was wondering - has anyone here ever tried refrigerating said housefly pupae for long periods? Do they survive? Will this work?

(I am familiar with all the warnings about housefly botulism and disease and parasites, so if we could dispense with them and stick to this topic [which I have been unable to read about elsewhere] it would be great.)

thanks,

Mark

Well, I had a little luck putting them in the crisper drawer. You need to keep them just above freezing to last any amount of time. You can order them pretty cheap from Grubco.
