Do JCPs actually have a defensive strike where they dont bite just launch for you or did i just miss seeing the mouth open?

yes a closed mouth strike happens it depend on the level of threat that the snake feels. It was just trying to scare you off. Like venmous snakes don't always inject venoum with a bite. I would say way more often than not open mouth strike are more common and venmous snake inject venoum.
