This past weekend I had the privilege of herping on the Savannah River Ecology Lab near Aiken, SC with some other people from my college, Davidson.
Friday night we did a bit of walking around the swamp and managed to catch several young cottonmouths. The following morning we returned to the same area to help a Davidson graduate and another researcher at SREL check their minnow traps for Seminatrix that they're doing a study on.
We caught a ton of Seminatrix, quite a few (including some incredibly attractive) Nerodia fasciata, and two of the greatest snakes in the country....a mud and a rainbow. Being from Pennsylvania, I've never had the opportunity to see either of these species in the wild before. As you can tell in the picture, I was thrilled.
Overall it was a great trip and I’m very grateful to have been able to go on it. Hopefully I’ll be making several trips back to SREL in the years to come.
Regards,
Wes
