Baby Pacman - QUESTION

sallie_keeper Sep 26, 2005 01:46 AM

Hi all, I just picked up a VERY TINY pacman baby...About size of dime. So adorable..and active.. Hopping all over cage..never seen pacman move so much.

Was wondering just how often I should feed it?? AND How big of crickets?? I do have a large adult, which I feed weekly.

I tried pinheads but frog was not interested.. Think they are too small. This frogs body is tiny, but mouth is BIG. Are they capable of taking food their own size?? I do not want to overfeed, nor underfeed.

Any thoughts??

thanks,

harpy

pacmans are supposed to be able to eat something up to their own size, thats why they arent supposed to be kept with eachother even when their size is exactly the same. however i would not recommend depending on this because it could cause ruptured stomach or impaction. where did you get one sooo small?
i would feed small crickets. not pinheads, just called small. they are usually about half the size of regular or large crickets. you could also try small fish. either guppies or small rosey reds. they may take them if you just place them in front of him and when it flops it may trigger it to eat it, or you can buy those plastic feeding tongs and hold the fish with those and gently tap or rub his nose/mouth with the fish, this usually alos triggers an eating response, or at least a defensive response that once they realize it is food turns into a feeding response. you are sure this is a pacman? i have just never seen one the size of a dime.

thanks.. I will be picking up some crickets tomorrow..now I need 3 sizes when I buy my bugs...fun...

And, yes, definately a pacman.. Nice green little guy.. mostly head and mouth..looks so funny on its tiny little legs. My size was off, more nickel size.. I will get a measurement as soon as it settles in..

thanks again,

harpy

If it's that small I'd feed it daily. Until it's about an inch snount to vent. Then feed it every other day to every two days.
I know that my baby ornate readily took 1 or 2 baby guppies or platties. And other days I fed it 2-3 small to medium sized crickets. Of course it's also important to dust their crickets every feeding or every other feeding. Growing little frogs need a lot of calcium

My ornate just about doubled it's size in two weeks.

I would recommend feeding 2 medium size calcium dusted crickets every other day.

I have 2 ornates of the same size, I feed them either 3-4 week old crickets, lobster roach nymphs, small guppies, and waxworms. I would look into incorperating the waxworms into their diet, as it helps them put on weight quickly. I bought my waxworm culture from http://wormman.com/cat_wax.cfm, 11 bucks plus free shipping.

You could feed larger crickets; as long as they will fit into the mouth, they're fine.
A good rule of thumb is, they can eat anything that's one-and-a-half times as wide as the space between their eyes.
