Sexing White-Lipped Pythons

JFDery Sep 26, 2005 07:16 AM

Hi,

I have an adult white lipped that probes 8 scales deep. The others where 5 and 14.

Male or female?

Thanks. JF

Hi Robert,

well, females will have visible spurs aswell. Usually in the same size. I wouldn't want to determine sex by looking at spurs. The male's could have broken off during mating, by scrubbing the females back. There is no sexual dimorphism recognized by Brongersma (1953,1956) and McDowell (1975). My females all have the same size of spurs, too.

I would have to look up the no. of scales for probing..

I would say that if you probed the snake to 8 scales you have a a male. That seems too deep for a female. How big are the snakes?
