But what does it all MEEEAAANNNN????

RalphSnakeMan Jul 19, 2003 06:29 PM

Okay, I need some help deciphering these classifieds...For example tell me if I have this correct:

2.3.2

The first number indicates 2 males, the second number indicates 3 females and the third number indicates 2 unknowns?

Also when an add says 66% Het what exactly does that mean?, that 66% of the bloodline was heterozygous? Is this basic genetics or what?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, it's male.female.unsexed.

66% het means there is statistically a 66% chance that the animal is carrying a recessive (hidden) gene for the trait in question -- for example, albinism. The normal-appearing offspring in a het-to-het breeding are 66% likely to be hets themselves, and 33% likely to be plain old normals. Yes, this is very basic genetics.

Most people unfortunately leave out the 'possible' in 'possible het'... Buying a poss het is like a bet. The animal is either going to end up being worth more than you paid for it or less than you paid for it. If it's a P poss het, there's a P chance you'll win.

The animal is either going to end up being worth more than you paid for it or less than you paid for it.

Thois is not necessarily true. The good breeders should sell a poss. het at the same price as a normal. At least I do and every one I've ever bought has been. Wouldn't it be great if they were all "good" breeders.

Once you breed a poss het to a definate het or homozygous, you're going to 'prove' if it's a het or if it's not. Once you find out, the animal is going to be worth the same price as a definate het OR the same price as a normal. Because at that point, it's no longer a poss, it's either a het or it's not!

now wait, just because one breed doesn't have any of the traits in question doesn't mean that that perticular pos het will never have it's traits passed or have offspring which will look like they're supposed to, isn't the percentage based on each breeding?

Still though...look at het for albino Boa constrictor. You are going to pay a load more than a standard BCI. So either you end up with a snake worth the price of a het, in which case you actually paid less for the snake, or you paid too much for a snake that is normal anyway. I have noticed this...I am sure others have as well. Andy
