I have a few questions about these guys

Linda G Sep 26, 2005 04:07 PM

I am having a conflict...I have been thinking about either
a uro or bearded dragon. I have a couple questions about
the uromastyx.

What humidity must they be at? All of my current reptiles
need higher humidities. I know they need a low humidity so
I am wondering how difficult it would be to maintain it?

On caring for them would you say they are pretty easy if
knowledgable about their needs? How do you think they
would compare to iguanas? I have 2.

If you own both a uro and a bearded dragon which would you
say is more rewarding.

I like the fact that for the most part the uros eat the same
thing as the rest of my guys. The live food that the bearded
dragons eat doesn't thrill me but I really like these lizards
too.

I am going to the NARBC in Chicago in October and I know they
will have babies. They did last year. My husband will kill
me if I ask for one but "oh well!"

Thanks in advance

Linda

different, I have 2 uros an egyptian and a saharan, I have also had a bearded dragon. Depends alot on what your looking for in your lizard, do you want a friendly handleable lizard, more calm ? Then a beardie is a great pet. They do need many many , many crickets when young and growing, you can go through 60 or more a day(small crickets) they are eating machines while growing.

Then you can ween them off a little and start introducing salads and even pelleted food. As they age in my opinion they get sort of lazy But Sweet.

My female egyptian uro is very sweet and tame, but the saharan is semi trusting, more skiddish and does not like to be handled at all. And I have had him for 6 years. Just his personality.
Uros' need higher heat/basking areas than beardies, and my enclsoures are quite dry. I will sometimes mist them briefly .

But for the most part soak them in the tub every week fo rtheir water needs.

I like each species for different reasons, I would say to read all you can on each, before you go to the show to buy, and take into consideration what you would need for each ,and decide which you think you can better provide the best for.

Not the answer you were looking for , but , I think you have to make up your own mind. Everyone has there own thouhgts on each lizard. Best wishes with your quest,

Let us know which you pick !

for posting. The show is this weekend and I cannot decide
if a more desert species will work. My iguanas and Redfoot
tortoise are both tropical and need higher humidities. I also
have aquatic turtles which produce humidity in their room.

I would want to keep the new little guy in the reptile room
but I am not sure how keeping the humidity down is going to
work.

I sure like the uromastyx as the thought of dealing with
crickets long term doesn't thrill me.

Thanks again, you were very helpful.

I have both the uro and the dragon they are both very easy. My uro I have had for 10 yrs now and hes the best so easy to care for no watering no misting no bugs just lots of freash fruits and veggies. I have a simple set up crushed walnut substrate if he is big be careful if he's small or you might have impaction. Lighting is a 18in flo 8.0 UVB and a basking light. Humidity I can remeber when I last checked years ago. I just look at him and know hes happy very active and a pig. The dragon I just got a month ago but its also been easy but you do have to do with water and bugs.
