Humidity woes.......

TobyEKing Sep 26, 2005 04:31 PM

Guys Im having trouble with humidity. I have a shelf system set up. Not with heat tape but it just like it on the back edge of the 12qt. shoe boxes. My temps are running around 84-88 and the front is running about 77-79 I have the water bowl on the front(cool) end of the box but yet it still is building enough humidity that it is wetting the bedding on the water bowl end. The humidity is high enough on that end that the side of the shoe box is staying wet. This is leading to the end of the bedding molding. Ive tried everything but going to a smaller water bowl. Im using a bowl like I have seen in some of you guys pics. The bowl from like Wal-Mart that they can hide under as well.Any help or thoughts will be greatly appreciated

Toby

Toby

I have the same problems living in a high humidty area. The only advice I can give you is change the shavings often.

I have a much bigger problem with the insects this time of year. I have knats all over the place and they will not go away until it gets cold.

Toby....I have had the same problem too until I decided to make more holes in the enclosures.......
The hunidity will cause mold and those damn pesky gnats....
I think more ventilation will help.....
Just a thought,

The moisture on the cool end is condensation. The warm back of the rack may not be very humid necessarily, at least not over the heat tape, but there is enough moisture in the cage where the cool end is getting wet.

My take is to either add more ventilation on the cool end or else simply don't have water in there all the time. If the cage is holding moisture that well, then offering water a few days out of 7 should be sufficient.

just guessing here, at two possible causes:
1) temps too high
2) inadequate ventilation holes in your shoeboxes.

might those be pertinent issues?

Well the temps I thought would be about right on each end,And ventilation holes I guess I could put more but I have what I thought was plenty. I guess I need to try and adjust each one and see how it goes from there.
