Nightcrawlers as food for C. cornuta

ZM-cornuta Sep 26, 2005 04:41 PM

I was wondering if anyone had any info on using nightcrawlers as a food source for horned frogs. I'm not sure if they should be transfered to a different soil because of what might be in the "soil" they are sold in. I've tried to research this topic and have come up empty-handed. If anyone has any information regarding this subject it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I have used nightcrawlers as a part of the diet of my frogs without any problems. I grow them myself in a vermicomposting bin in my garage. I purchased the initial colony from worm man. I keep them in peat moss and shredded paper, and I make sure the substrate is always damp. When using them for feeding, I wash them off with dechlorinated water before feeding them to my herps. If you are worried about the soil content in the worms, you can place them in a shallow basin of cool water overnight and let them void their gut contents(taken from horned frogs, by ray hunziker). I havent had luck getting my cornutas to eat them, so you may want to pick up a few at your local pet store or tackle shop before purchasing a large colony. good luck!

Thanks for the info skunklord. Since my initial message I have fed my cornuta 2 "canadian nightcrawlers". If I can get the right equipment I will try to post some pictures. What else have you tried to feed your cornuta's? So far I've fed mine crickets, pinkys, fish(Mollys and Plattys only),hoppers, and just recently nightcrawlers.
Thanks Again

I got mine feeding primarily on a diet of lobster roaches, crickets, and silkworms. I occasionally give them pinkies, anoles, house geckos, southern toads, or squirell tree frogs as a treat.
