Name for a Cane

sallie_keeper Sep 26, 2005 08:23 PM

Hi all, just bought/rescued my 3rd cane toad..Petshop was afraid to touch it..Though it was going to spit venom at them...so funny.. So they gave 100 crickets if I bought it(couldn't pass that up).. Now I have 3 of these wonderful little monsters..

I need a name for it.. I do education displays and need something cool. I believe it is female, no release call or thumb pads like my 2 males.. The males I have are: Toad of Doom(came with that name), and Toadally Cool. Something can will go will with the males.. Only thing I have right now is either Toadzilla or The Toadinator..

Any suggestions??

Hi Sallie,

I don't have a name suggestion, instead I have a plea for help! I've had a cane toad for several months now, and the little bugger is still not eating well for me (I have noticed some crickets gone, but still quite a few that remain after each feeding). He's in a naturalistic 40 gallon long tank, in a quiet room. I do not attempt to handle or disturb him. He appears to me to be getting weaker...can I attempt to force feed him? I even tried feeding him a rat pinkie, but still no interest. Should I move him to a more sterile environment (i.e. rubbermaid)?. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Has you toad always been this picky or is it something new?? Is it normally eating and soaking in waterpot?? Does the toad go in the water NOW?? What are the temperatures in your toad room and tank??

If your temps are around 70, he may be trying to hibernate. Try adding a low wattage fish light to tank..put is on a 12 hour light cycle..if you want to keep it up all winter. Or put light on same time as outside.. Warmth will help, so will seeing the light.

If your temps are too warm, make sure the waterbowl is big enough to soak whole toad.

I have a male that spent 4 weeks in waterpot and would not leave for ANYTHING.. I had to take him out by hand to clean and fill it.

As for tank, i would stick to natural setting. Keep toad from getting too stressed. To help in feeding, you can add a little pedialite(drink for babies) into water. It may help stimulate appetite.. But change the water daily if you do this, as that stuff tends to spoil fast.

Try posting this as new toad message. There are some great toad people here..

hope this helps some...
