Can-o-Worms???

donjuan Jul 19, 2003 07:23 PM

do leos actually respond to the can-o-worms or do they need a live food source. the reason i ask is because the thought of having mealworms in the frige really creeps my mom out and i heard that crix are a pain. send me your thoughts, experience, or expertise please!!!!!!!!!!!

Leo's don't normally notice non-moving food and the food might not be as nutritious although it says they were filled with this and that before being frozen and dried, dont always believe what you read. n/p

Iwouldd't recomend raising leos on just "Can-o-" products, but most leos wil definately eat them. I have used these a few times when I got them for free from the Zo-med sales rep.

Sorry about the spelling in that last post.

Crickets arent that much of a pain. I just keep them in a little cricket keeper with gut load. They dont escape or anything. I just use long tweezers to take them out of the keeper than put them in a bag and calcium dust then throw into the tank. Its not really a hassle at all.

I wouldn't feed your leos just the Can-O-Worms. It's not the best food source for them, I look at it more like an emoergency food in case I run out of crix or mealworms. You shouldn't keep your mealworms in the refrigerator all the time either because mealworms go dormant when cold so they don't eat and if you are feeding mealworms to your leos that are not properly gutloaded, your leos are just eating hard shells with no nutritional value. Try taking your mealies out of the refrigerator, feed them for 24 hours before you feed them to your leos.

I use the can o worms off and on to vary the diet as much as possible, though i strongly agree to one of the previous posts when they said that the leo's don't respond well to non moving food, I started feeding mine by putting some of the worms in a dish and put a couple live ones at the bottom so when the live ones moved, so did the dead ones. Now, they eat the can o worms with out having any movement at all. Don't get me wrong, i like using the worms, but I personally do not agree to making it their staple source of nutrician which is why I offer live crix and mealies and occassional pinky.
