Need FF container dimensions and FF lighting question

rc_racer_007 Jul 19, 2003 07:35 PM

I am going to get an old kitchen cabinet to keep my fruit flys and ever other insects I will be raising. I need a rough estimate of how tall a 32 oz deli cup is, and also the diameter at the widest spot.

And a lighting question. I have heard you can raise them without light. But light helps. I am thinking of rigging a small fluorescent light in the cabinet. Has any one noticed productivity differances if you use or dont use lights on FFs?

thanks!

As for the deli cups, mine are 5" tall and 4 and one-half inches wide at the mouth. I've experimented with my heidi cultures with and without light, and I've seen no difference at all in production. I would suggest saving yourself the trouble and expenses and nix the lights, but that's my own opinion.

I agree with Randy.

I use the 4 " x 7?" containers that you get chinese take out and soups put in. They work great.

The yeast that you put into the cultures is certainly not photosynthetic. Can't imagine why cultures in light would do better other than the fact that they may be slightly warmer. But you don't need light to have a warm room.

The lights have nothing to do with fruitfly production they are just used to keep mites away from the cultures

I dont think lighting makes much of a difference, i have tryed with and without, and my deli cups that i use are about 8inches by 5. the light would make it easier to check the flies and stuff though.
