How much does everyone else feed their turtles?

untappedpilot2 Jul 19, 2003 07:44 PM

I was just reading a thread about baby turtles and it said they were to be fed only 3-4 pellets a day, and the responses were saying that was about right!

I feed my 2 RES [this is for both turtles] enough pellets to cover my palm with my hand cupped. [This is approx. 40-50 pellets...give or take.]

Thanks in advance.

How big are your turtles? One general guide is to give your turtle an amount equal to the size of its head, not including the neck. (Hatchlings once a day up to a year, and every other day for older turtles.) If they are babies and depending on the size of the pellets, the posts you read are about right. It sounds like you`re feeding them too much. Remember, they will always beg like they are starving, even if they`ve just been fed. Give them veggies like grated carrots or some red-leaf (not iceberg) lettuce if they`re begging.

My 1st turtle is 5inches in shell length and the 2nd is 4 1/2inches in shell length. Grated carrots sounds kinda messy and would get caught behind my basking spot but I'll definetly try the lettuce. Thanks for the help.
