Bugs in my terrarium!

Sekoye Sep 27, 2005 11:56 AM

Well I introduced some cork bark into my terrarium about 2 weeks ago. Today I've noticed little tiny bugs crawling around the little cork hut I've made for my frog. So I took the cork bark out, gave it a really good rinse in the shower, but when I went to go put the cork bark back in, I noticed alot more bugs then I first thought.

It must be the log that has created these bugs correct? I don't see how else they would get in, and so infested....

SO! I have a few questions for you all. I have spot cleaned since I have got my frog. It's been one month since I set up the terrarium. There is no smells at all from the terrarium, and I believe I've kept it quite clean. I've heard the eco-earth I've used is good for 3 months. This batch I'm going to just throw away. In the future, will it last three months? Or should I be doing a FULL clean once a month?

When I do a full clean, it looks like its going to be a bit hard to do. Once I have scrubbed the inside of the terrarium, taken out all the eco-earth and replaced it all... before I replace it, what do you use to clean the glass? Just a soap and water kind of rinse? What about windex to clean the glass?

Hope someone answers me soon, I'd like to clean it today! =) Thanks!

You bug problem is actually gnats. If you use bed-a-beast type substrate, the will show up after about 2 weeks. I change my frogs substrate every sunday. Remember, frogs dont drink; they absord water through their skin. If you dont change their bedding regularly, they will be sitting in their own urine. The cork log has nothing to do with your bug problem.

Good luck!

If the bugs don't fly they could possibly be springtails..these are little white bugs that hop. They like to congregate on the wood in my terrarium, but I don't think they hurt anything. At least that's what the folks on the newt forum said....
