anyone is using a hardware store bought fluorescent fixture?

icemom Sep 27, 2005 01:45 PM

I need to replace my fluorescent fixture (my bulb's size 24" and it's new), anyone knows a website to look for it? I've been browsing but can't seem to find a good one. Or maybe a home improuvement store's will work with some adjustments, like added reflection.

I use a light fixture I purchased from Home Hardware. It is a 48" Two bulb Ballast designed to fit t12 bulbs (the thicker sized bulbs only) It plugs into a wall outlight, and it needs two bulbs in it to turn on.

I also use a corded ballast where just two ends of the cord, connect to the ends of the bulb. Both of those cords attach to the ballast (electricity converter) and then blug back into the wall outlit.

The photo below is of the hanging ballasts.

In the next two photos you can see the ballast, but it is not turned on. You can see the other bulb, that is haging from the cords though.

All my light fixtures come from hardware stores. Both basking and florescent tube fixtures. They are much cheaper and just as effective. Mounting can be a problem, but you can either mount to the underside of the cage top, if wood, suspend over an open top cage, or just use a board wide enough and long enough to rest on the top of the cage and hold the fixture securely.

For small tanks I use 18" under cabinet light fixtures, just remove the tube it comes with and replace it with a UVB tube. For longer cages, a 36 or 48" single or double fixture is good. For double, you can either buy two UVB bulbs (alot of extra money) or one UVB tube and a regular full spectrum light tub.

For basking bulbs, I get the ceramic light fixtures rated for a bulb much hotter than the one I intend to use. 225 or 250W rated fixtures are good. It isn't likely you would need a bulb stronger than 150w.

just a thought.....

since you need to replace a fixture....why not switch to MVB? then you only need one light.

No, I'd rather not... I was told that MVL is damaging to the eyes, not only dragon's but also humans. I have two small kids, don't want to take chances because they will be below the bulb looking kinda up at it.
