Rescued some trouble makers!

Corbin Sep 27, 2005 07:57 PM

Yesterday I rescued 2 adult BCIs, they lived in horrible conditions. I currently have them quarintined out side my snakeroom. I fed them today only because it had been months (3+) since they last ate, they both took 1 f/t collassal rat with no problems and no lump (I figured a small meal shoudl be fine). Oh, someone told me that either males or females have short stubby tails in boas, and my big one has a very short stubby tail (it looks funny IMO because my burms have long tails). Is this true, and if so, which has the munchkin tail?

Well here are some pics:

All the pics are after stripping the cage and cleaning them up.

They came with this tank, and currently I have no empty cages. They aren't even in this now, I put them into rubbermaids for quarintine.

This is the smaller one of the two, it has a longer tail.

This is the larger one with the stubby tail.

those pics MAY be deceptive, but both of those animals seem to have great body weight and are not malnourished at all. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE remember that boas have a completely different body structure than burms, they should be more square. If they start to look like your burm (like someone to a giant "O" and dropped an anvil on it), you've WAAAAY overfed them and they're now obese!
Anyway, looks like you've got some beautiful animals there, thank you for taking them out of whatever bad situation they were in. And as for sexing them, at that size, you may be able to reliably count on the spur size. The males should be larger. The females should be small, and look like they're kind of dug into her body a bit (although some females have larger spurs and some males have smaller ones).
Or, you can just have someone sex them for you. Best of luck w/ those animals! I'd have them vet-checked if I were you.

Yeah I know that boas are different, I have kept them before. I was surprised that the boas were in such good condition compared to the cage situation. They had 3-4 piles of feces in the bottom and 2 or more old sheds in the cage as well. There was pee all over, it was wet when I got there. The only heat source was a hot rock, and we all know what those are known for (BURNING THINGS!). The little one seems a little skinny (like she could use maybe a pound or 2 added to her) but she is fine over all. These are first boas in a few years though. I am working on getting an appointment with a vet right now.
