Under tank heating

Randy27 Jul 19, 2003 08:57 PM

I've always been an advocate of putting heating pads on the sides of tanks rather than underneath them. However, I'm having trouble bringing a few of my pumilio tanks into the lower 80's. When I place the pads on the bottom of the tanks, I can usually achieve my target temperature (83 F), but not when I place them on the side. Will placing the pads underneath the tanks yield any negative consequences?

I have never tried this nor looked in to. But my biggest concern would be some sort of leak and would cause some bad things with the heater

Hi,

The only reason not to use heat pads under terrariums is because of the depth of the soil and dranage substrate. In large terrariums its often a good six or seven inches deep. Most small heat pads don't produce enough heat to heat all of the soil and actually change the temperature in the terrarium if they are placed under the tank. If the temperature is getting to where you want it by placing a heat pad under the terrarium go for it, it shouldn't do any harm. Good luck,

I'm just using a very thin layer of gravel for my pumilio tanks instead of any organic material. Thanks for the help guys, I'm just about finished with my setups and I will post some pics sometime soon.
