Ovulation questions and pics............

bthacker Sep 27, 2005 10:31 PM

Okie Dokie......So this is my first time breeding Boas but have bred numerous colubrids when I was younger and obviously this stuff isn't very straight forward like most colubrids.

My couple pictured has been courting and I have witnessed verified copulation about a month and a half ago but up until now I haven't bothered them or actually been able to verify whether or not they were "connected".

Tonight they were definitely "connected" and she looks like she just ate a 3 lb rabbit. Her last meal was on the 6th. Is this a pre-ovulation swell and he is still breeding? If it is how soon can I expect an ovulation?

Thanks for all the replies......if I recieve any .

My males will generally lose interest a bit of time before I notice ovulation. I don't know if this is with every male though. It sounds like everything's progressing well for them. Good luck with them.

Hey B, that sounds great! I remember what it felt like so here is what I can tell you. Just keep him in with her. Keep the temps right and spray them down every once in a while. She will swell up big, but that may not be the ovulation yet. Sometimes they fire off seperately and I think that is what causes people to pull the male too soon, then when the other ovary fires there may or may not be any good sperm left. The male will sometimes rest a day or two between good breedings. don't think he is done yet. I also use those signs of a break to feed them as well, then the next day they are usually back at it. When your male is done he should let you know. It's funny they will lay at the other end of cage or be trying to look for a way out. If you can just wait for her to go into a shed. I would think that to be the best way. Sometimes my big male just wants out so I have no choice but to put him in with another girl. Send me an e-mail if you have any other questions. Take care and good luck. Andy Federico

Thanks Andy-

He has showed no signs of quitting but I was also in Costa Rica for 2 weeks. I honestly don't think he has left her back though. I really don't see any sense in pulling him early. I have twice only to feed him and he was back at it within minutes. I sure hope they can work it out

Hey Brett,
It could be a pre ovulation.Sometimes you will see a lump(not as big as an ovulation) in the female that lasts for days or until there ovulation.Usually they will ovulate a week or so after the pre-ovulation.Do not take the male out untill after she ovulates for sure.My males were still going at the females while ovulating. All I can say is keep watching them from here on out!!! good luck!!

Thanks Mike. He isn't going anywhere!!! Although this morning he was on her without their tails together. Makes me wonder if it's an ovulation? I guess I will find out in a bit with a shed. Take care.
