Sexing Red Tail?

jasonw Sep 27, 2005 10:58 PM

Hi. I Have a young Ret tail and plan o breeding “it” when “it” get bigger. I have had many of these in the past but never had an interest in breeding until now. My LPS just got 2 new young boas in the other day and they are absolutely beautiful. I would like to buy one to be a future mate for my current snake. Is there a reliable way to sex young RT’s? The pet store knows what they have as the breeder sexed them for the store but they don’t know how to so they can tell me what I have.

The simplest way is to grasp the baby at the vent, with your thumb just below the vent, your forefinger on the opposite side. With a bit of pressure, move your thumb down towards the tip of the tail. If it is a male you will feel two small lumps roll out from under your thumb. This works well on babies up to 3 feet, and I've even done it on trim adults up to 4-5 feet...once they get too fat or too much muscle, you won't feel the lumps. Once you sex them this way, look at the tails from the vent down...most males will have a longer, thinner tail, the female's will be shorter, blunter. Then look at the spurs..if it is a baby, you may need a magnifying glass, the males will be hooked at the end, the female's blunt. But, of the three, the rub is the easiest. You can also have a breeder or vet probe them, but if it is not done correctly, they will be hurt.
