refusal to eat crickets

jgaeta Sep 27, 2005 11:42 PM

One of my cresties will not eat crickets I put them in a smaller cage to feed and when cleaning their cage. I have put my Ziggy in the smaller cage with crickets (three one time only one another) and Ziggy just paniced. The first time my crestie just froze this time Ziggy moved around but no eating. I left Ziggy in their for a good 30 min and when I opened the cage he jumped out into my hand. Could I have a crestie that is afraid of bugs? I have no problem feeding my other crestie crickets, Spaz tears them up. Also I hand feed them both their baby food/suppliment mixture and they don't seem to eat it if it is not hand fed to them is that normal?

how old are your cresteds and what size crickets are you trying to feed them? most of the babies, even up till 2 months just won't touch crickets. they'll watch them like they're gonna, but never do. also,if the crickets are too large they may not try to eat them as well. and finally, some animals just won't eat what other animals will. make sure whatever you're trying to feed them, it smaller than the space between the eyes.

The crickets I feed them are tiny so I know size isn't the problem maybe I'l just try again when my crestie grows a little more- Thanks

Both my female geckos wouldn't eat crickets when I first brought them home. With the first one, i called the breeder, who said she had been pounding them back at the store, and prolly just needed to establish a new territory. She ate baby food fine, mixed with CGD. I fed her meat baby food about once a week just to make sure she had some protein. She process worked well. She started eating crickets in about three or four weeks. However, I rarely see her eating. She only gets active during the night, and I only see her grab one if she hasn't had them in a while. I suggest leaving a few crickets in the tank overnight (with baby food for crickets to eat) and see what happens. The seperate tank might stress them out.

My second female was the same way. It took her a little longer, but she eventaully started eating them too, and now is one of the most active hunters I have.

yeah, one of my cresteds won't eat bugs anymore either. I've started using the higher-protein Gargoyle diet for them and since I've started she's gained some weight and is now the fattest one! It's weird, she'll guzzle down a ton of the GCD and babyfood, but bugs? Forget it! My others readily eat both. Don't understand it.
