shelly, Teddy going for his walk...

Niki Jul 19, 2003 09:34 PM

2 years ago when we moved here, first house finished on the
street as you can tell from the construction everywhere,
we continued our habit of walking in the evenings like he
did when we lived at our old house and he was tiny. Then
we only got a few dozen feet and came back home, but it got
him into the habit of walking with me, on the edge of the road,
amazingly well. Trust me I've had a billion cars stop and
gawk "is that a pet?" etc... In this particular pic he's
trying out his Halloween costume of red glittery horns!

never a leash, he heels better than most dogs I've seen.
"Is that a toy?" - I guess it looks like a robot toy! lol!
Last year we were walking around the block and back several
times without getting tired, and never ever taking a bite
out of anybody's yard or flowers (who knows what they've
sprayed on it.)

my son is bringing him down to me on the driveway. I used
to keep a sharp eye out for dogs, now he's fairly good sized
but I'm still watchful. I'm glad I taught him to walk
back home, because carrying him is not an option for a long
walk back! I know he's slower coming back than going about,
but we cross the road and go back on the other side so it's
different. This whole walking thing started when he was
tiny and would walk all the way up our driveway at the old house
to a tree at the end and look for bird droppings (yucky, maybe
the berries were good in it! ) and then I'd walk up there with
him since it was on the road, and eventually we'd venture a
bit further up the road, and that was it, he's forgotten about
the bird poop and likes walking around. Always when we get
back he gets a green pepper or something. The road surface
is always good to the touch of bare feet, not hot.
There's a group of exercise ladies that walk and see him and
always comment on how big he is, people still gawk though most
of the people here know us by now. I've had people tell me they
thought I was walking a dog or cat until they took a better look.

Teddy is too cute, and he looks like a very happy sulcata. How old is he?
