bearded dragon's foot hurt - help!

bolz Jul 19, 2003 09:38 PM

My bearded dragon tore off a toenail after scratching at his aquarium. He started biting at it and tore off half the toe and another one. I immediately took him out cleaned it and put a animal approved ointment on it. I have kept him in a separate aquarium to keep an eye on it and he did not bother it for many hours. After leaving him for about 1/2 hour I came back to find he has torn off half of the rest of his toes on that foot. I used quick stop to stop the bleeding. I want to wrap it but am afraid he will continue biting it more with tape on. Help!

boy....I really would suggest trying to wrap it. He is biting it because it hurts, doesn't know what else to do. It's best to provide a barrier her him to bite at instead of his skin.
How big is he?

Think of what they would do if he were a dog....wrap it with several layers to keep him from licking the wound, even covering the last layer of dressing with a sock (i know they don't make dragons socks). If that didn't work, they use those collars (like satellite dishes) so they can't bend their head down to lick the area. If you can't keep the foot wrapped, you may need to approach it from the head & put some sort of wide collar on. Tough problem, I'm so sorry
