Does the substrate color affect their body coloration...?

ginevive Sep 28, 2005 01:06 PM

A guy walked into my friend's pet store and claimed that his BCI was so light colored, due to the fact he kept it on white sand. He had the snake with him; a 5 foot male. It had awesome contrast and was really, really light in between the saddles. Is there any truth to this? I keep my boy on cypress mulch, and he is a darkie.

Boas natrually change color throughout the day, in conjunction with thermoregulation. However, color is not dependent on substrate color.

Added, sand is a TERRIBLE substrate for boas.

The only thing I've noticed is change with temperature or temperment.

If he is constanly dark, my guess is you are keeping him a little cooler then he had been prviously kept, also stress may be playing a role. You can get some color change from substrate example, albinos kept on newspaper will sometimes pick up some of the ink. Craig
