hi! i usually post/hang out on the toroise forum, but i though that i'd share something on a more appropriate board!
while my boyfriend and i were allowing our red-foot tortoise to go on a supervised walk in the fornt yard, we found a small snake about as long as a pencil! knowing that it wasn't a poisonous species (though not entirely sure what he was), i was able to pick him up and say hello before we let him go again.
some later research revealed him to be an eastern smooth earth snake. what seemed appealing about it as a species is that they eat worms and insects, and, while i've always loved snakes, i've never kept one as a pet because i don't have the heart to feed mice/rats/etc. yeah, i know, the snake has to eat, circle of life and all that, but i can't help it.
he was pretty mellow for a wild snake. are these, or any similar species which remain small and feed on invertebrates, good as pets? it's not my intention to catch a wild one, but a captive-bred snake of a similar type would be tempting if it woldn't be high-strung.
too bad i didn't take a picture; here is my tortoise instead.
