Book on breading Dragons

bstewart1010 Sep 28, 2005 05:16 PM

I am fairly new to owning bearded dragons, I have a male and female that are 6 mo old each. I do not plan on breading them - but i want to be prepared for anything that can happen in the future. Is there a recommended book out there on bearded dragons that properly infoms on breading? I am also looking in to incubators. Again I do not plan on breadig them, but if it ever happens I wuold like to have my ducks in a row. thank!

You gave me a good laugh I needed thank you. I think you meant breeding them not breading them. I took breading me to mean you were going to baste them with bread. ahahahahah That was cute.

If they are housed separately, you really don't need to worry about them breeding accidently. As far as I know there are no books specially about breeding dragons. The brearded dragon Manual is pretty good with the basics. Females will need to be at least 350g and 18 months old or older before breeding her. The male can be younger as long as he is the same size as the female. Hovabater incubators are recommended the most, or a home made incubator. Vermiculate mixed with clean untreated soil (ie no chemical fertilizars or insecticides added) with water added so it packs down firmly but doesn't leak water is good for an egg laying container, about 8" deep. Vermiculate mixed with water by weight (ie 100g of vermiculate mixed with 100g of water) can be used to incubate the eggs in. Unfortunately I can't remember the exact temp range or humidity range for incubating offhand.

Thanks for all the advise. I will buy the manual ASAP. I house mine together - they are buddies. How do i know when the female is in heat so i can take her out? I got my beardies from Petco, they told me that it was preferred to have them live together...fortunatly these two are very friendly with each other. I am watching them close because as soon as she is ready to breed I will separate them.

or anything else petco tells you... 999 out of 1000 petco employees make things up to hear themselves talk.

sometimes you can filter out good info, but housing them together isn't a great bit of advice, for the most part.

i would definitely buy the Bearded Dragon Manual, and read the forums!!! talk to people here, they've got much more experience and valuable info than anyone in a corporate pet store... ya know what happens to intelligent reptile people in corporate pet stores? they get fed up with not being allowed to care for the animals properly (corporate office sets housing and feeding standards, and they have nothing to do with the animals needs), and they quit! (ahh... the voice of experience...)

good luck!
