Borneo Blood Pythons and colors from young to adult

leapin4lizards Sep 28, 2005 07:19 PM

I was just wondering if Borneo Blood pythons..approximately how young are they at about 1 1/2 ft long and do they retain the coloration they have at this age into adulthood or do they get lighter or change in some way?

Thanks..new to Blood Pythons but very interested in them.

Karen,

Size is actually more closely related to feeding and their pre disposed rate of growth than age. Just as a guesstimate I would say in the 4-6 MO range or so? As far as colors... Borneo's are different. I've gotten dark babies that lightened up alot as adults and light babies that are really dark, to the point of having black heads. Usually the actual colors (oranges, yellows etc) that they have will get brighter while the general hue of the animal goes light, dark, or stays the same. If you happen to get a picture of the parents it should help tell you what it will look like. The best bet is to just watch it closely especially at shed time to see which way its going. If you have any other questions feel free to ask, Borneos rock!

Hi, thanks for your reply. The snake is at a pet store so cannot find out what the parents look like. Can you recommend a good secure yet economical cage/enclosure for these snakes, I know they are strong. Just would like to make sure it cannot get out. From what i have read at least 4 feet wide is appropriate. How about height, would it be happiest in a tall and wide tank, that is what I was thinking though i have read they like smaller enclosures.

I actually work at this pet store. We never get Blood Pythons but this was a special order our company made and we have one and it is absolutely beautiful, I can handle it easily though everyone else said it was crazy aggressive and constantly striking. I am worried about it going to the wrong home and i have beocome attached to it so considering taking it home.

Sorry so long and thanks for any advice!!

I keep my small Borneos in small, semi-clear Sterilite storage containers with clasping lids. The containers are about 16 inches long and maybe 10 wide I think.

I keep mine in rack systems to keep them secure. As for larger cages you dont need a tall cage at all, they are a ground dwelling species. There are many companies that make the larger cages such as Cage Crafters, Animal Plastics etc.
