Beautiful Hognose. I "think" it is an Eastern. I have heard tails of Mexican Hognose, but I haven't a clue. Beautiful little guy though. Does he need a good home? ? LOL

oh but he just found his home. i wanted to make sure it was a hognose before i go and pick him up with my hands since he kinda resembles a pygmy rattler a little bit i think anyways we cought him because we didnt want the cats messing with it there. he's about 8 inches long and rather aggressive

That is a eastern hognose..and there not aggressive there more defensive.. like bluffing when they strike or puffing there neck out and playing dead..but they arent really aggresive and they are midly venomous, but no harm.. and they can be a pain some times to get to eat.. most only except young toads and frogs..unless scenting.. with on pinks..but being that small and being wc..most likly will be a challenge..keep us posted on how it is eating and ect.. I have a eastern just like.. that.well a lil more red.. nice snake though.. and great find !.

I found the small tree frogs or leopord frogs work well with smaller snakes. Just make sure the snake can catch the frogs. Others will tell you to switch him over to pinkies. Here is a link that list several different ways to convince him to eat pinkies.

You probably need to get him to a vet to check for parasites. Quite common in WC Hoggies.

Here are a couple of links to care sites. The basic care is relatively the same for the different N. American Hogs.

Those are just a few of the sites I came across in my own search for info. Hope they help. Lots of luck!!

If you can't find toads treefrogs work great, but if you just put the treefrog in the cage it will climb up the glass and the hognose will never catch it. Open the cage slowly not to startle the snake to much and hold the treefrog by the back legs to secure it and slowly put it in front of the hognose and he should take it. I've done it a million times. I used to have tons of green treefrogs around my house in houston.

The brown frogs by the creek are likely cricket frogs and completely harmless. Those will work good also. You would be suprised at the size of treefrog they can handle being that the treefrogs are slimy and go down smooth. My hogs loved them. Hognoses are exclusive toad and frog eaters and there is no toxic frogs around that area.

In terms of color and dorsal blotch count, it looks more like it could be a Dusty than an Eastern. What color is the underside of the tail? In easterns the underside of the tail is never black and usually a lighter color than the belly.
