i just got my digital camera back and id like to post some more photos of my cage and snake but im having problems.i took a bunch of photos yesterday but the one i posted of my cage was the only one that came out decent and even that one has a huge blur in the middle.when i include my snake in the frame it gets all washed out and looks like a ghost.any ideas? my camera has a macro setting and i have to use that but when i do im getting all these problems with certain colors turing into rays of blinding lights.

I use a piece of paper in front of the flash to help cut down on the flash wash you get. I'm experimenting more with the macro, and super macro settings. I didn't get to do much today with Tempest. She's shedding even as I type, but when I had her out to take some of her color changes, she was so wrinkled and dry looking I didn't want to keep her out any longer. It's really hot, dry and windy here today, and I thought it would just make her more miserable. I'll take more this weekend when she's fully shed out.

It's all in the lighting. Try to get as much light on the subject as possible, as using flash with macro isn't going to work. it can be hard and annoying, but it's doable. also, try using a tripod, it'll make the shots come out even if there isn't too much light.

My flash won't even go off on macro. Yours does? It won't give me the option in macro, or super. My flash will on the flower setting, but that's when I use a piece of paper to keep the flash from washing everything out. Usually I can zoom to make the subject closer when on the flower setting. Macro, super macro, you have to be right on the subject for it to focus.

It depends...I've seen cameras where you manually have to go in and turn off the flash or else it goes off. But either way, your best bet is to get as much light from other sources on the subject as possible, even if not doing macro photography. Also, you don't want direct light, like the flash it'll wash out the color and make for a crappy pic.

wait meg,i am using the flower setting,i thought the flower setting was the macro,im confused.what setting or symbol is macro?? on flower setting the flash does go off for me.anyway,if you go back and look at the photo i posted of my vivarium you can see what im talking about.certain things get washed out and you cant even see the large bromeliad in the center.its the largest thing in my cage and it just vanished.i guess the leaves were too shiny.

cmlreptiles Sep 29, 2005 12:32 PM

The best way to do it is to take the viv outside on a really sunny day, or just do it in a very brightly lit room so that there's no need for a flash. When you use a flash on glass like that, it relefts it and screws up the images.

Hey,
I don't know if you know this or not, but the flower setting is the "Macro" setting on most if not all digital camera's. As for lighting, you should use flash compensation on the dial or setting's feature in the camera, and dial or turn it down by -1/2, -1EV or what ever works after playing with it for a few shots and seeing what works for your particular camera. You're basically reducing the flash out put.

Well, I've got the flower (macro), a super macro, an MF and a super macro and MF setting together. Each one lets me get closer and closer, but of course cuts the field of view down.
