Tempest is shedding for the first time in her new Vision cage. I made perches from pvc that I burned a bit with a torch and such, and I find she's having a hard time getting off the shed with such a smooth surface. Her old rubbermaid had real branches in it that were pretty rough in places and these don't have that. There is one section that has vine attached to it, but she's not going there. She's partially shed right now, and kind of hanging out. With the rough branches, she used to shed withing 30-45 minutes. This is taking much longer. Has anyone else had this problem? I'm thinking tomorrow, I'll attach more vine to the perch to give her more rough surface until I can get a large enough set of branches to put in there.

My biak up until recently had PVC perches and had 3 perfect sheds, but i'm guessing she used her bedding, cypruss mulch, to accomplish this.

I'm thinking I'm going to try putting a few more vines on the perches, and maybe making them a bit more rough with sanding. I ended up helping her shed by holding the skin and working it off while she crawled on the perch. It was the strangest thing, she never tried to bite. Just sniffed my fingers and let me do it.
All I had was a flashlight to see with, but she was cool with it. The final piece she was a bit ready to be done with it, but otherwise she was great. I might have to bump up the humidity more next shed. It was nice and moist, but I had sprayed the crap out of her just hours before because she felt really dry. I'm still getting used to the larger enclosure and I think I'm underspraying it.I have a better idea now what I need.

yea meg,thats what i was going to suggest.sanding the pvc with a large grit sandpaper.i dont like pvc for that reason.it is cheap,easy to cut and clean but i feel it is too smooth and watching my snakes suffer while trying to get a shed off conviced me to go to natural wood.im sure pvc is not bad but i feel that any added stress during the shed process cant be good.if a snake is forced to the ground and to use his substrate to get a shed off,just proves that maybe its not the best way to go.

I agree. As soon as we trim the sycamore, or my neighbors mulberry tree, I'll snag some of those branches. I got some small ones for the baby when it comes.
