I say, wait! I RARELY ever slit eggs. Why? My personal expeience shows that babies I let hatch and come out all on their own are simply stronger feeders overall. I just wait until they slit the eggs, open the slit a bit more with sharp scissors to ensure no problems getting out and move the egg to a shoe box a day or two later. They have their first shed about 7 to 10 days later and generally ALL feed on the first try without fail. I have a clutch of 11 normals that recently hatched, they shed and ALL fed within 15 minutes of a live hopper mouse being introduced. I prefer to wait.

p.s. - I will admit I slit my het x het albino eggs this season at day 61 JUST to see if there was a yellow and white baby inside an egg... and there was... just ONE! D'oh! But, the slit was maybe 4 mm in the shape of a "V". Just enough to see with a flashlight shining on it. All the snakes had to open eggs on their own including the albino.
