My Jackson's Had Babies!!!!

jwthought Sep 29, 2005 06:53 AM

...and I was totally unprepared for it. I was suspecting she was pregnant because she was housed with a male when i rescued her and she had lately been looking rounder than usual. So right now there is 4 babies. I assume there will be more, so should I leave them alone until I feel she is done or get them out ASAP? Im going to try to house as many individually as I can. Anyone have any pointers? Do they eat right away? I do have access to pinhead crickets and fruit flies. How should I be watering them? I assume they are too small to benefit from the misting system. What supplementation schedule should i use? Any other advice is very greatly appreciated. Thanks.

No worries, just don't panic!

Okay, now that I got that outta the way....
First thing, seperate the babies from the parent(s). The mother has little love for her offspring and she will eat them if given half a chance!
Second, feed pinhead crix and fruitflies. Plenty of each! I wouldn't worry too much about supplementation at this point, just try to gutload the crix, and give some direct sunlight or UVB light to the babies. We have to make sure they survive the first couple of weeks before we start worrying about supplementation!
Watering: yes, mist their foliage. try not to mist the babies themselves, as even small water droplets could block their noses and cause asphyxiation. Use SMALL droplets.
Heat: jacskonii are a mountane species, they require cooler temps. So do the babies. Try not to overheat them!
Finally- scour the enclosure for more babies! If the mom is looking rather thin, you can be sure that you probably have more babies hiding. You have to look hard, as they will not move much and are impossibly difficult to find.
Best of luck!

Jacksons usually don't eat for the first 2 or 3 days. So don't panic if they don't eat right away. But I think it's a good idea to introduce FF & pinheads in limited quantities just the same.
