LEOPARD GECKO WITH EATING PROBLEM!

KSDayGecko05 Sep 29, 2005 12:52 PM

I've had my leopard geckos along with my Day Gecko and Ball Python for 6 years, going on 7. Recently I went through a 3 1/2 week period where (I won't lie) I just plain missed the feeding schedule on my leopards (I don't like to make excuses, but it has been a busy month). Usually I've been feeding them about once a week and they've done fine with it, but obviously, I missed awhile. I feel horrible about it, but that's beside the point.

Bought some superworms yesterday and was able to get all but one of them to eat a decent amount. She's the mother of two of them, and lost a leg a few months back to what I'm assuming was agression with tank mates and her tail for a second time (I seperated the gecko that seemed to be causing the agression). I've tried force feeding (which has worked in the past when she's decided to be stubborn) but she won't swallow. Tried buying crickets today to see if she'd take something softer, but she was less willing to take the crickets than superworms.

Basically I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas about something I can do to get her to eat. I'm worried I might lose her if I don't do something soon. If you know of any liquid foods (drops) or something I can use until she gets back up to speed enough to take crickets PLEASE LET ME KNOW! My email is Powercat026@AOL.COM, or you can just leave a response here. Any help would be appreciated greatly! Thanks!

i personally feed my leo every other day, usually crickets. every once in a while ill give him fruit. since i got my baby cresteds ive had a lot of baby food around and gave it to him one night for s. and g. he loved it. might want to give it a try. peach seems to be his favorite, might want to try mixing some chicken baby food in for protien. dont forget the calcium supplement.... good luck.

Were you using calcium w/ D3 on the crix? 1x a week isn't really enough.....maybe it has just been a gradual thing and it took this last time to make her crash. If you can't get her to eat at all bring her to the vet. Just let us know if you have been using calcium with D3 bc if you havnt that is probably the problem...along with the large amount of time between feedings.

Recently I just started using the Reptivite vitamin supplement with the crickets. Had previously been using other brands but bought the Reptivite brand a couple months back.

Unfortunately we lost her two days ago, the others are doing fine, but my attempts to get her to eat the last few days must have been too late and it appears other factors may have contributed....since I posted a couple other things have come to light. One of the younger geckos apparently had been hogging the food (he had been routinely hiding under the water dish so I hadn't really noticed until recently the major difference in his size). I moved him to a seperate container once this became apparent. So I would partially contribute this to the problem. But I feel very responsible for this and I can't say that I don't deserve whatever criticism I may take for it. I guess I feel like the only thing I can do is never let it happen again & I've already laid out a much more frequent feeding schedule and plan to follow it to the letter. I'm also considering trying to give away the others (although I do plan to keep my Giant Day Gecko), just need to find a good home for them with a friend.

Thanks again for the help guys, I appreciate it.

I own 6 reptiles and amphibians and I would be willing to keep one of your geckos.
