Ball python tank question:

shadowmonkey01 Sep 29, 2005 01:37 PM

I recently bought some gun cabinets from walmart that I would like to turn into enclosures for my ball pythons. They are approximately 4' wide by 6' tall, hexagon shaped. Very much aboreal tanks is there anyway I could get them to work for my ball pythons. Any pics. of setups that work would be appreciated.

I think that you would have a hard time controlling temps and humidity in that enclosure, and that it may be too tall, making the ball feel a little insecure, I would set that tank up for an arboreal species, But I dont know of any that would feel comfortable in that large of a enclosure, or are small enough to fit in the cage

It might be alright if you lie the tank down on it's side, then divide it in half, is possible. This way you have a 2'x3' tank.
Having the cages as is, probably be good for frilled dragons, some larger arboreal snakes. Tying down again, would be great for larger pythons, maybe rainbow boas, as a display cage.

yeah, I was definately thinking frilled dragons too! You cover the center pole in cork bark, and have other branchs coming off of that (and attaching to the walls) for basking and climbing. THAT would be absolutely AWESOME! You would just have to make sure you put some good hiding spaces in for them, as having so much viewing area around them might make them uncomfortable.

But as for use with ball pythons. I think the only way you could make that work is if your main source of heat was a UTH, and if you had A LOT of low hides. Then the rest would just basically be wasted space I think. Or, you could put shelves in to divide it into several cages, but then you need to come up with a good idea for doors to replace the one tall door.
