It really depends on the size and age of the dragon. I use washed sifted play sand. For hatchlings I use paper towels , so i can change them daily. With the sand you can make a sifter out of screen and a fish net. The sand gives it a nice natural look and they love to dig in it. Some breeders use shelf liners. Avoid using any type of wood shaving as they can be toxic. Do not use any type of scilica sand or calci sand either.
anyways hope this helps.

I have two bearded dragons that are about 1.5 years old. ive mostly been using crushed walnut shells that you buy at the pet shop. they look pretty good but sometimes i notice one of my dragons sometimes eats a few by accident when eating a cricket. i dont want impaction so i thought of big rocks but thats probably not worth it too keep cleaning.
about the play sand, it that better for them to ingest? and is it finer than the crushed shells??
It is way finer then crushed walnut shells.
the walnut shells are horrible for the dragons, especially if the ingest it.
on larger animals sand just passes right through them, walnut shells can impact them!

Be very careful with that walnut crap.. I received a monkey tail skink that was passing that stuff in the stool 4 months after being removed from it. it can really build up in the gut and cause problems. I personally choose to take all the risk of impaction out and use shelf liner, or an indented craft paper... Repti-Carpet can be used as well.
If you want to use any particulate substrate I would suggest what nathan recommended. The washed sifted play sand you can purchase at lowes or home depot.

On that site you can put in your zip and find the closest place to you that carries it. Most wal marts, kmarts, home depots cary the rolls though. It is the stuff you would line drawers/shelves with. It is the non adhesive kind, so it is easy to take up and clean. Dragons get good traction, easy to spot clean, and safe to keep them on.

I use ceramic tile...it didn't cost much as it comes in 12" X 12" tiles...the pieces I needed cut, Lowes cut for me...it doesn't take much work to clean it...the style I got is sand colored...textured so that it resembles sand that has been blown by the wind ...it has a slightly geritty texture so the dragons have no problems slipping...and it dries quickly...and you can stack more than one tile if you need to to raise their basking spot closer to the light to get the right temp...
