cohabitation

i was recently considering buying some large toads and the lady who was selling them told me that she was keeping them all together and they were happy. i think there were cane, roccoco, and smooth-sided toads...anyway, what i'm getting at is if all those big toads got along well, would it be possible to keep comparably sized cane and colorado river toads together in a large enough enclosure or would the crt's be a deal breaker? also, is her experience probably replicable or probably a fluke?

Hello,

We keep two rococos together but I personally wouldn't keep them all together if they weren't the same species. I supposed in a big enough tank they'd be ok if food was abundant and there was a large enough water bowl. As a rule, I just never like to mix species.

i wasn't even worried about aggression as much as toxins, she seemed to feel that they're pretty content, which was surprising enough with the cane toads, but i guess the main thing i was wondering would be if the colorado river toads would just make it all impossible when mixed with cane toads, but then on the other hand, in a large enough enclosure they may all just burrow and i'd usually hand feed them anyway

Well, true that bufo marinus does have the most toxic bufotoxins of all, but all those species are pretty potent, too. What size tank were you thinking of? I mean, a large marinus needs a pretty big tank when there's just one of them. Did she say what size she had?

Wow! Your toads are so cute! AWWWWW!

I have tried eco-earth. Personally, I still prefer organic soil, but I don't discourage people who prefer either eco-earth or bed-a-beast (btoh coconut shell based products). The main goal is to help toads avoid impaction and either choice is considered safe, particularly if the soil is sifted for large ingestible peices.

We have not been able to breed successfully. Tiny passed away last year and we've had tons of trouble finding a male. We've only found females all season. Kisco and Tiny would be in amplexus for hours sometimes but she'd never lay eggs. Meanwhile I have a toad right now who is full of eggs and has no male. *sigh*

Hopefully, someday we will have a mature pair for mating who are ready and available at the same time.

Glad you enjoyed the site. It was designed for those of us who are partial to toads!
