RETF eye problem,

timandkate Sep 29, 2005 08:59 PM

I have 5 RETF and there is one who always stays by itself. He recently developed a problem with his right eye, where it is reduced in size and in color. The pupul is paper thin and the other eye is normal looking but the pupul is rather big. He eats, but still is not "fat". I am very worried about him, and would like to know what I can do for him, and what is the matter?

They have plenty of room, 70-90 humidity, 75F, eat well

Crickets do not bother him. Is it a virus? He seems to be a little sick, as sleeps longer and moves slower, active but not as active as the others.

Give me your thoughts and similar experiences. Thanks

Best, Tim

I have seen this problem many times, although for several different reasons. First of all, how large is the enclosure? When exactly is the humidity 70-90%? Is it all the time, in the day or at night. I have bred RETFs for years, and I have many colleages that have as well, and we have the best luck, especially with WC adult, when we let the tank dry out in the day, and mist at night. My RETFs are kept around 40% in the day, and up to 95% at night. Of course this is all different when breeding comes. Also if the tank is at all overcrowded some will not take to that very well. Does his eye lid look like it is swelling? Is it a different color? Are they WC or CB? How often do you do cage cleaning, water bowl cleaning, the temp, and how long have you had them for? I hope the little guy makes it.

Hello,

Thank you so much for responding to my post. Here are some answers to your questions.

The little guy has thinned out, moves very slow, and has hard time sleeping. I hope to fatten him up a little, so he has more energy to fight what every is attacking him inside.

how large is the enclosure?
It is 48 inches tall by 24 inches, about 40-50 gallons, I would say, I have a water part with a filter and fogger. I have live plants and some cork wood in there. They are all the same plant. It has been in there for over a year. The crickets do not bother him.

When exactly is the humidity 70-90%?
I brought the humidity down like you said to, it was around 90 all the time. Although he got this when it was dryer, like 40 percent, when it was deathly hot this summer.

Is it all the time, in the day or at night.
All the time. I've changed that though.

Also if the tank is at all overcrowded some will not take to that very well.
There is only 5 frogs in the enclosure. It is designed with space to move, but also with space to hide too.

Does his eye lid look like it is swelling?
His eye lid is not swelling, but rather his eye ball is shrinking. it is like red, with bits of yellow and his pupal is paper thin, and black. It is his right eye. His left eye is fine. I think he is having a hard time finding food, although he was thin, fattened up and now is thin again. Is he sick?

Are they WC or CB?
I believe they are wild caught.

How often do you do cage cleaning, water bowl cleaning, the temp, and how long have you had them for?

Every couple of weeks. I change all the water and remove any dead leaves. I have had them for about a year now.

I hope there is something I cn do, I guess the best thing is o wait and not stress him out. I am trying to provide food for him. Any suggestions??!!? Anything will help.
