Question on UTH

whatever1234559 Sep 29, 2005 10:45 PM

I'm soon to be getting a Corn Snake hatchling and have a question about the use of an UTH. For now I will be putting the baby in a 10 gallon tank. Before long, when it gets bigger, I will be putting it in a 20L gallon tank. I would very much like to be able to move the UTH from the 10 gallon tank to the larger one. Here's the question: Can I attach velcro strips to the tank of the 10 gallon tank to attach the heater to so that I can then use the same heater for the larger tank? Because I know that once you attach the heater to the tank, it makes it useless for anything else because of the sticky tape that they put on them.

Even if you did move the UTH, it would be either to big for the 10 gallon or too small for the 20 long. Why don't you just keep your snake in the 20 long to start with? I started mine out in a 29 gallon. He is about 14 months now and 35 inches long. Nature is really big. I don't know why there seems to be some kind of size limit on snake vivs (other than practicality).
This one I made and it is 42 inches long by 27 inches high and 24 inches deep. There is also a den box on the floor. My snake gets to it through the pile of rocks on the left side.

Why don't I just keep the snake in the 20 long to start with? Because that is not what I'm choosing to do.

Why didn't you just start your snake out in the 42 x 27 x 24 deep viv?

Now, back to the question. I asked if anyone knew if attaching the heater with velcro would work.

Duct tape works for everything...... I have moved them from tank to tank and they stick fine. You just have to becareful and take them of slowly....

Hmmmmmmmmm.........DUCT TAPE!!! Why didn't I think of that? Seeing as that is my son's FAVORITE tape in the world for EVERYTHING!!!! Usually why I can't find any around when I need it.

Thanks, sounds like a perfect solution.

Rather than attatching the UTH to the tank itself, try attatching i tto a tile plate, and place the tank on top of that. It's much easier to move the tank to a new tile than to move the UTH to a new tank.

and attach the UTH to it. You can move the tile wherever you need it. You can even switch hot spots to the other side of the tank, if you get bored (or find that it works better for plugs, etc.). You can raise your tank up a bit off the tile, if the temps get a bit too hot.

Thanks!! Another wonderful idea. This one has to be my favorite, though. I like the idea of it not having to be attached to the tank at all. Much more versatile. Leaves me with much more options as to tank usage and location, as you said. AND it finally gives me something to do with these extra tiles I've had laying around here forever......LOL.

He didn't deserve this sort of response from you. He was honestly trying to be helpful by letting you know that the UTH you currently have may not be appropriate for a larger tank - which is something you should be aware of. And grumpy replies to people who respond to your posts will result in fewer people being willing to take the time to respond to any additional question you may have.

You could try sticking your UTH on an appropriate-sized pane of glass (duct-tape the edges so you don't cut yourself). My UTH came with four little rubber "feet" for the tank..I put them on the corners of the glass pane on the side opposite the UTH. Prop up your tank about 1/2", and you can slide the UTH under it. Heat transfer may not be quite as efficient as sticking it to the tank, but you can use it on any tank, and can reposition it as needed with no problem.

With my "gracefullness" I would cut myself anyways......LOL. Ceramic tile would probably be safer for me. Though I like the pane of glass idea of being thinner than the tile. Wouldn't have to prop my tank up as much for airflow.
