LOST!!!!!!!!

asia2003 Sep 30, 2005 09:03 AM

Hi All,

You may not have caught my reply to the lost brb thread, so I am starting another!! Fuego managed to escape the confines of his feeding tank last night!!!!

We had him in there with a f/t mouse, and a plexi top, and he still got out! He didnt eat the mouse, and we had checked on him 5-10 mins before he dissapeared! I tore the room apart, but to no avail.

I have a few (silly) questions...

1) do you think he would be more likely to travel up...or down from where he was (tank was sitting atop a piano!!!)

2) How far from the point of escape would he be likely to travel???????

These may be silly questions, but any help would be great....I left a mouse in the feeding tank this morning....plexi lid is off now.

Hoping we find him, he is greatly missed

Leyla,
....In my experience they always first go into the nearest exceedingly tight hiding spot that they find. You probably think the snake could not find a path to get inside the piano but I am betting that you will find him inside it. If not there then inside or behind something else that is close and smaller than you think he could get into. After time they will travel further away from the point of escape. They are most likely to move at night. The humidity inside your house is WAY too low for the snake. Depending upon how small the snake is it will dehydrate and die. A little baby BRB will dehydrate and die fairly quickly. A healthy adult can survive for months if it can find water to drink in your house.
Good luck,
Jeff

Thanks for the advice Jeff,

He is just over 4 months old, the only place I havent looked yet in the immediate vicinity, is inside the piano, although it was my first guess, it was just too dark last night to get a really good look inside there. I will do that in a few mins.

Would it help to put several bowls of water around, in the area that he escaped??

Am starting to freak out now

hey dont feel so bad, mine got out 2 days ago too. i cant find him, i have alot of places he could be and im getting a little discouraged. good luck

asia2003 Sep 30, 2005 12:07 PM

ok, so I pretty much destroyed my piano moving things around inside it.....but, he didnt go there!

I think I am going to have to broaden the search area now. The biggest problem is the fact that we are currently remodelling our house, so there are walls half up/down etc, he could be anywhere!!

Will keep you all updated!

Just a thought, make some really nice places for him to go, warm/damp/tight place to hide that you can check periodically.

Thanks Dave,

I followed some tips that I found online earlier, which is to lay down grocery bags in the most likely places.....the theory is that if he moves over the bags (like leaves I guess) we will hear him...will probably have to wait for nightfall for that!! (yes, I can see myself pulling an all-nighter) I have also left the feeding tank exactly where it was, set up with a f/t mouse and heat lamp. Will probably put a bowl of water in there too. All I can think to do, is to keep checking the same places over and over, whilst expanding the search to other rooms.

Thanks for the advice, will also try to come up with some warm moist places to stash here and there for him too.

Leyla,
...Lose the heat lamp. Unless your house is exceeding cold the snake will want dark security far more than heat. The paperbag trick works with bigger snakes but a little snake may not move them much. The dog usually finds the lost snakes here. After two Copperhead bites he has finally learned to bark at rather than attack snakes.

Well don't get disheartened if you don't readily find him. My vet lost my BP in his clinic for 4 months one time due to a careless tech. I even went there with a flashlight and searched extensivly for hours to no avail. (BIG clinic)

After 4 months the receptionist stood up, turned around, and there was my BP sunning himself in front of the double glass front doors. (I'm in hot Florida) They nabbed him and called me. Man was I one happy camper.

I'm still amazed he survived 4 months in an icey central air conditioned clinic without getting sick!

Hope your luck is as good.
