Importance of hides and climbing branches?

orrg Sep 30, 2005 11:00 AM

I have a new crestie about 3 months old in a ten gallon turned on it's side. I have 3 medium sized exo-terra silk plants hanging from the sides and a little suction cupped hamock in the corner(which I've never seen him on). I use paper towel as substrate and have the bottom bare except for a water dish. I want to make sure the little guy can catch the crickets. My question is does he need any hides and the bottom of the tank and do I need some type of climbing log, like cork bark angled into the corner? All he does is stick to the glass all day, do they get tired from that?

Need is a subjective thing. They will live grow and reproduce in a bare bones tank with nothing but egg carton to crawl on.
Much of tank decor is for your veiwing pleasure .As for items on the bottom, a ten gallon tank is a good sized space for a 3 month old.Its probally wise to maximize his ability to catch crickets. At some point at the very least however add a branch he can crawl on and perch comfortably.

Some say floppy tail can happen from cresties that stick to the sides upside down all the time. I dont know how much truth there is to this..but I do know cresties like a place to perch.

I have witnessed floppy tail in animals kept in a glass tank with no branches, vines or anything else. All 3 kept in this bare-bones environment had it. I have to tell you that I felt so sorry for these creatures and their sorry existance. They must have been bored sh--less. I decorate my enclosures to within inches of their lives with plastic vines, branches and cork logs and I like to think that my critters live a little closer to what they might've enjoyed in the wild. Also, none of my animals has ever developed floppy tail.
