I need some advice on substrate, cleaning, etc...

philg Sep 30, 2005 11:24 AM

I've had my beardies for over 2 years, and have taken great care of them. Recently I moved to a smaller apartment. This poses a problem since the beardies are in my living room, and every time they poop, it literally stinks up the whole room for a long time. I used to use rubber shelf liner mat, which was fine when I had a dedicated reptile room, and have since switched to sand. The sand is a little better. Can anyone reccomend something that may absorb the smell a little? Could it be their diet that makes it smell so bad? I don't want to get rid of them, so I'm looking for answers first. Thanks for the help...

If you plan on investing in more reptiles, it may be usefull for you to think about ordering an air purifier with clenses the air of smells. I will be looking at one of these around decmeber I hope.

normaly the poop stinks but its should not be very bad .
if its smell so bad if its realy knock youre socks of ,then you could have parasites.
if the poop is steady and not runny and it not smell bad you have a healthy poop.

B22 is right, although beardie poo is pretty nasty (its from all the roughage!) it shouldnt be so bad that its causing you a serious issue.

First step would be to get a fecal done, if parasites are causing the smelly poo then no substrate is going to help.

Sand is not an idea because it is going to harbor that bacteria and is very tough to keep clean, i would suggest a couple of things...

1. Shelf liner (i know you said you tried it, but i dont know how you were cleaning it) if you wipe up the feces with a wet paper towel and toss it away then it shouldnt take long for the smell to disperse.

2. Bath training them. There are many beardies who mainly defecate in the bath, including mine. You should be soaking your beardie at least weekly, so just up that to 2-3times a week and extend the baths for as long as your beardies will stay in. Most of them naturally want to defecate in the water, and if they are provided with enough oppurtunities to do so, they will eliminate almost always in the tub!!

Good luck!

the air purifier is a good idea. You can also try cleaning and disinfecting with nolvasan or chlorhexidine. It has a fresh scent and deoderizes. It can be sprayed directly on the poo and the BD without worry so it makes cleaning a snap.
chlorhexidine
