Preserving my red ear sliders shell

matts1985 Sep 30, 2005 02:00 PM

My red ear slider drowned itself, well not really but it got flipped on its back side and couldnt get back over. I want to keep the shell does anybody know how to preserve it and get rid of all the exess skin... All that is remaining is the tail and the skin back there my snapping turtle did the rest.

I would think if you dug a hole and leave it there for 5 months and dig it back up.

You keep a snapping turle with other turtles?

ya they were together and have been for probably 4 years...they always got along, probably because my snapper is real nice. Except for when hes hungry lol.

I asked an expert friend of mine.

He suggests:

Clean it as well as you can, and then boil it in a well-ventilated area to remove the rest of the meat. Not to hot or it might split.

After the bones are almost completly cleaned soak it in 90% water 10% ammonia overnight.

Pick off any remaining meat and dry in the sun.
