When's the best time of year to aquire a baby corn?

nightserpent Sep 30, 2005 06:41 PM

Hello All!

I am getting the urge to pick up a baby corn (perhaps Okeetee or Bloodred), and I am wondering when would be the best time to get one? When are the most available and when can the better deals be made. I'd ideally prefer to adopt one, but I just don't see corns out there a lot (mostly boas, burms or balls).

One other possible factor- I live in New England (Boston), so I could see cold weather being a possible factor in regards to shipping.

Thanks for any light you can shed on this,

Paul

if you go to a reptile show you can get one right then and there. i don't like the idea of getting one shipped in the mail. who knows if it will arrive alive. plus at a show you can look and all kinds and pick one you really like.
i recently bought a baby motley butter corn. it was one of the prettiest ones i saw. there were 2 motley butters but the one i bought was more prettier and more active. plus shows are a blast!!

Thanks for the quick reply! I assumed there was a breeding season... not so??

I agree, I'd ultimately like to see the babies with my own eyes and pick one out that I really liked. I have a small concern that someone might ship me one that I am not so thrilled with. I'd certainly prefer it over them going through the stress of shipping- I just assumed it would be my only real choice. Do any shows ever come to the Boston area? That, or reputable breeders in my area?

look up on kingsnake under 'events'. it will list where shows are. i also find out where shows are in the reptiles magazine. my last show was last week down in tucson, az. that is where i got my baby butter motley. i'm waiting for him to settle in before i go flashing a flash in his face for a picture.

i'm not a breeder so i don't know when breeding season is for corns. i think it can be what every the breeder wants to make it. they can simulate a cool period to get the corns into breeding condition or something like that. so babies are basically available all year from what i understand.

One next month about an hour away.. the only New England one in the whole list (too cold, I guess??). Thanks for the tip.

breeding season starts in mid to late winter for most breeders. When all the eggs hatch, it's usually mid summer. Some corns double clutch so there can also be hatchlings available well into the fall as well. The most variety is probably around mid summer but you can expect to see a variety of corn snake hatchlings and yearlings at any show. I live much further north than New England (in Canada to be a bit more exact) and we have reptile shows as late as Febuary here, in the Toronto area anyway.

Now is pretty much the tail end of the selling season. Breeders still frequently have a lot left, but the best ones are usually long gone by now. Whileon that topic, I also like picking out my own at a show, but as a breeder AND buyer, I usually buy the snakes LONG before a show. My BEST 25% or more were ALWAYS pre-sold before show season (and even hatching season) even started! Want the best? Put a deposit with someone with great breeders NOW for 2006 babies. I just did.

In other words, maybe you can pick out the best at the show that you like the most, but only the breeder(s) can pick out the BEST that don't even MAKE it to the show for you.

Not to be nit picky, but it is illegal to ship/receive snakes in the mail. You must use a common carrier (like Fedex) or airlines (like Delta).
