reuse of plants in vivarium

sandnmyteeth2 Sep 30, 2005 09:40 PM

Hello I posted a message on 9/15 about my frog not being able to eat. After over 20 days of trying to eat he passed away. my other frogs seem to be fine.
Not knowing what caused its death Im not sure if I should reuse any plants or moss out of its vivarium. Any sugestions on how to disenfect the viv would be helpful.
THANKS Shawn

I have heard of people soaking plants in bleach (like a couple minutes?). If the plants are extremely rare orchids or something really expensive, I wouldn't even risk it and just toss the plants.

The plants are very unlikely to be the source of your frogs' demise or harbor anything harmful. Just taking cuttings from those that will propagate from cuttings and washing the leaves off with warm soapy water, rinsing in clear water should be sufficient to save the plants and make you feel better about possible contamination. For rooted plants that don't propagate easily from cuttings, you can remove them, wash off the soil, cut back the roots and some of the foliage, and do the same thing, replanting in fresh substrate.
