Precision cage/bulb in cage question

Ritas Oct 01, 2005 10:43 AM

Hi everyone
I recently bought a precision cage for my new mex milksnake and use a heat pad on one side but wanted to also use a 15 watt bulb for light during the day or red bulb at night to watch my snake.
Has anyone used a bulb in the cage the bulb is 15 watts but it seems hot to the touch (I havent used it yet but tried it out).
Yet I see some use higher watts in cages. The cage is 24 inches by 20 inches and bulb socket is on one side of cage.
Thanks

15 watts is nothing to worry about.

Mexican milks spend most their lives on and under ground. It isn't going to target the bulb and try to sit there. Besides, 15 watts won't damage tissue anyway.

You might find that by using a thermostat and going with a 20-25 watt spot-type lamp, you can eliminate the heat pad altogether. Just a thought.

Montane snakes are the coolest...

I love the idea of the spotlight to "direct" heat never occured to me. Your right the snake mostly hides but its a pleasure to handle as its so calm.
I had the bulb installed on one side of the cage instead of middle for heat and cooler area.
The cage is 24 by 20 inches and plenty of room for him. I am very happy with it but since going to use your idea of 25 watt spotlight with thermometer going to see if my husband will make the bulb guard as the one at bigapple herp is to big for a small spotlight.
It would be an eye sore in such a pretty cage.
thanks
Rita
