Gravid Jacksons

vegasbilly Oct 01, 2005 05:01 PM

Hi all,

I received a "sub-adult" pair of Jacksons about 60 days ago. I'm only assuming they were kept together prior to me receiving them. The female is about 6" s-v and is as round as a butterball lately. She eats very sparingly and stays near the "warm" part of the cage most of the time, and is a mustard yellow/muted green color all of the time. They are now separate as she reacted visibly the second day I had them w/gaping mouth and camoflage markings.

The male certainly looks sexually mature though he didn't react too sexually agressively the two days they were initially together. Coud she be gravid at such a "small" size? At what general size are females able to reproduce?

I keep Veilds and Panthers but there seems to be alot less info out there in regards to Jacksons. Any referrals would be a bonus!

Thanks,

Bill

It was my experience when i had Jacksons that the females seemed to mature faster than the males. I had one give birht to 25 babies at 8 months of age. I would keep and eye on her. Right before she's due, she will stop eating altogether and start hanging out at the bottom. Keep in mind also, that Jacksons dont like really hot temps but they do need a lot of moisture...be sure you keep her well hydrated.

There is nothing better than walking up to her cage and seeing a bunch of mini jacksons all over the cage. Very cool indeed. Good luck. Just to be safe, you may want to get you some fruit flies ready just in case. In a pinch, Petco has some. I used to get all mine from reptilefood.com but I always seemed to be caught not ready and had to run to petco for a couple of portions to tide me over.

Good Luck and Enjoy!!!

Thanks for the response! The ambient temp. in her cage is 77F w/a basking spot on one side of 82F where she spends most of her time. There is a drip on all day and she's misted heavily twice per day.

So if the gravid female starts hanging around lower than usual, it means that the wonderfull thing is going to happen soon? Cause my female is crawling low too since 2 days ago.
I really hope so....
