Dwarf Caiman Question

lordchristensen Oct 01, 2005 05:18 PM

I currently have a Juvenile Dwarf Caiman in a 90 gallon aquarium and I was just wondering whether or not it would be alright to let my small Florida Softshell turtle share the same space or not. The softshell is about 3 inches in length. Any help would be appreciated.

Its funny that you ask this question as I myself am wondering wether it would be ok to house a 3 inch snapper turtle with my 10 inch dwarf caiman. If you go to the photo gallery of this web site (under crocodialians), you will see some people housing turtles and alligators together under one peace. I will experiment in about a month or so. I will let you know how it goes. In my opinion, you can go ahead and try it. As long as both of them have enough space and food, you should have no clashes. Turtles actually do a great job at cleaning up dead matter after the crocs meals. Keeps your tank cleaner. If you got more questions let m eknow.

Hi,

Crocs and turtles can sometimes be kept in the same enclosure successfully without much problems. I wouldnt keep Red Eared Sliders with them as they are notoriously obnoxious turtles which like to bite toes. I have an Eastern Painted which is fine with crocs however, he gets chased by my gators. I personally wouldn't recommend keeping them together unless you have a spacious enclosure for stress factors. I dont' keep my turtles housed with my crocs all the time, as they usually are only with them when they are in their outdoor enclosure. You can experiment and see what happens but if you see the turtle try to bite toes or tail at any time, I would recommend separating them immediately.

I don´t trust most turtles, they use to go for toes and tail tips...

good look
