Puffy eyes, lots of time in the water- What's up?

shopunke Oct 01, 2005 07:08 PM

Comet, my 4 month old froglette, has been acting a little funny lately.

Earlier this week he had all of the symptoms of Dropsy. I immediately changed his water, made it a little warmer and gave him fresh crickets. The next day he was fine, back to normal, acting very healthy.

But the past few days he has been spending a LOT of time in his water... I mean, I go to bed and he's in the water. I turn on his light in the morning and he's in the water. I go to turn off his light and he's kind of on the edge of the water.

Also noticed that Comet was keeping his left eye shut underwater a lot, and tonight it's a litty puffy and discoloured, and his right one is a little funny also.

His colours have been changing crazily- usually a light tan/brown, but one night he was such a dark brown you couldn't see his markings. He got very skinny a few days back but nothing a few crickets won't solve. (He's only about 1.5 inches, if that)

So what's going on with Comet? Is he just a sick froggy? I was thinking bacterial infection and if it is I probably should go out and get him a filter, right? It's about due time for one...

Oh, and FYI he's a leopard frog... Pretty sure a Southern Leopard frog. Maybe his water is too cold?

Please respond... this is the only real good frog forum I know, but it's so slow.

Thanks!

So glad people actually answer people on these forums.
Makes you feel like they really care!
How wonderful.

I'm not a frog person..have no idea. However, if you're asking for free advice, and then get upset because the advice doesn't come in the time frame you expect, then don't be surprised if you don't get any advice at all.

I know virtually nothing about leopardfrogs, as I don't know how much time they usually spend in the water.
Maybe if it's a really dry enclosure, it seeks moist from the water?
Anyway, I suggest you consult a veterinarian.

once again im no frog expert, current have a tomato frog, so know a little. The one thing i would suggest is that you find a smaller tank, put some paper towels into it and a little bit of cover, from here it is easier to observer your frog. They also seem to really like the wet paper towels! If after a couple of days you still feel he isnt back to his normal self then i would suggest a trip to the vets.
