Nervous

Rob_Sleeper Oct 01, 2005 08:33 PM

Hey everyone,
Just a serious question. When you guys are holding your pet burmese at like 13 ft or more in lengh, do any of ever get nervous or scared because it is so big and it is a animal that could really hurt you?
Thanks so much,
Rob Sleeper

LOL, only if it's one of them with an unruley attitude. Or maybe hasn't been fed in six months . In general they're pretty mellow snakes. If you've raised that thirteen footer up from a two footer you've had it long enough to read it's moods and should, I hope, not try to handle it if it's feelin' a little spunkey. Otherwise there should be no reason to fear it.

Quig,

I think there is one alligator who, if still alive, would have issue with your comments there. (see news above)! LOL!

When I work with large burmese, I very rarely get nervous. Mainly because when I work with them I ALWAYS have someone nearby who knows what to do in the event of a bite and coil of one of the big guys. I have not had one coil up on me yet, and if one does, I'm not overly worried about it. A good rule of thumb is NEVER handle a large snake without assistance. I truly believe that these animals can sense fear and do not like it. So keep cool, and have assistance.

I would have to say not nervous but respectful. I got my first taste of how strong they can be and how fast a big one 12 ft can move when I took her outside. So I am respectful but I did get a little nervous when she freaked out but I remained calm.

I wonder why that is. My burm can be on the floor in the house all day long and you can walk by and pet him whenvever you want and he just goes about whatever he was doing. But when he is in the lawn and you leave him roam for about 10 minutes then try to pick him up, he'll hiss and take off really really fast. He's even sprayed urin at me a time or two. But it just seems to be outside.

IMO some snakes get a little excited when outside do to the overwhelming amount of scents that are in the air that they usually dont get when inside. Also IMO if you feel nervous, then you must be dealing with something you not to sure about and should maybe waiy until you feel more comfortable so you wont get into a bad situation, even if you have help.

The only time i'm nervous is when its feeding time or i have to fill the water the day after feeding time..

jason do u use a hook? it makes things much easier especially after feeding when having to deal wth them.IMO

jasonmattes Oct 03, 2005 05:14 PM

yea i use a hook..doesnt do much good shortly after a feeding though..its best just to keep the door shut and let her calm down for a couple days.
Its not uncommon for her to strike at me right after a feeding either...I could only imagine what kind of a fight i'd have if i didnt feed her in the cage..

Amen to that.
