bosc monitor or Dumerils leanig toward dum but have questions

joeyjoh Oct 01, 2005 09:15 PM

I keep going back and forth with these two. I do realize the care is different. Here is my problem I think the Dumerils would be more enjoyable to watch and I am leaning toward the Dumerils. I am just worried that if I go Dumerils then I may be disappointed in the size. I know most Bosc are around 3ft but it is a well built three foot. Most Dumerils I have seen look long and skinny. I have never seen an adult Dumerils in person. I have no frame of refernce for the dumerils. I have seen some photos in the gallery but i still can't tell size. I even looked at a photo of one on Varanus.net. He looked very large but is this rare or the norm?

does anyone have a photo of an adult dumerils being held by a person sitting by a person or near a person for size comparison. What would be really great would be to see an Adult Dumerils and an adult Sav"bosc" with the same size reference be it a dollar or a coke can just something.

last thing those of you of have cared for both or just one , which do you feel is the more intelligent?

i have seen plenty of argus and flavi, are Dumerils comparable in size or is it not close?

Last thing do any of you know whhere I could get a Captive bred Dumerils.

Most of the adult dumeilli you see are wild caught and dont achieve their full potential. My adult females are 3-4 ft males 4ft .
I have kept both exanthematicus and dumerilli, and have found dums to be much more active and interesting than savs.
Dums are fun and hardy when captive bred, wild caught is a whole different ball game.
I am currently incubating three clutches of dums and witnessed two of my pairs copulating again yesterday.
Here are some photos.

great pics
when do you expect this new clutch to hatch and how much are you asking for them. I think I would go with a male if you can sex them as a hatchling. Tell me if Im wrong but in an old post you said the main source of food you use is crawfish. I know not the only, but main source right? Also since there isn't alot of good material to read on dumerils I was wondering if you would give me a layout of size cage, food schedule, temp levels and humidity levels. I read different things on different posts but I would like to here it from someone who has breeding adults.

also have you heard of anyone doing intelligence test or attempting to train dumerils.

Simple food ques and clean ques not roll over and get me the paper.

any tests on color recognition? can they see color if so what range.

thank you very much

Temps, humidity, food schedual, cage size,....jeez,ya want me to keep 'em for you too.....
Just kidding,
There is actually some good stuff out there, maybe you should start there and get back to me with further questions.
Daniel Bennets book is good,as is "Varanoid Lizards of the World"
By Pianka/King, The taxon Management report on Dumerilli by Mike Fost is exellent,as is "monitors, the biology of varanid lizards" by King/Green, Also Mark Bayless and I wrote an article for reptiles mag march'04.
As far as "training",I will say that they are very intellegent, and pick up on our behaviors quickly.
I do feed mine a staple of crayfish,4-5 times a week or more,I also feed whole shrimp/crab,mice,roaches and even mealworms occasionaly.I feed my dums every day.
You should contact me thru ks for answers to your other questions,as advertising is not allowed on this forum.
Good luck
Ben

once again thanks for the books to read. I have the article in the Reptiles Mag too. That is what sparked my interest in the Dumerils.
