GTP Caging Question

md42007 Oct 02, 2005 10:55 AM

Ok by now we have the new Exo-Terra cages, my question is, are they the best choice to keep an arboreal? any pros/cons? Also I am getting ready to purchase my first GTP, anyone have a good starter list of materials required to start my terrarium? i.e. is a misting system that beneficial, Hoods or heat tape? Thermostat etc. any info would be appreciated. thanks.

well you already say you bought it so i dont know what explaining the problems with the cage would do other than maybe make you mad.well actually some of the problems can be fixed so i guess its worth mentioning.the doors dont seal very tight enough so humidity escapes and litte flies and things can get in while they are attracted to the humidity.the top is screened so you may want to lay some glass on that to also hold in some humidity.i think they are ok for chondros but for less money you could have bought a cage that required no customizing.the doors seem a little flimsy and i have heard from at least 2 people that the doors have broken in the first 3 months of owning them.it doesnt seem to be a huge problem but i would use care when opening and closing, being careful not to do either with too much force.besides that i dont know of anything to look for, maybe someone else does.

I have an exo-terra cage and to tell you the truth, I have mixed feelings. It has a split screen top and in order to help keep humidity inside, I had to buy a piece of plexiglass to cover up most of the screen. The front glass doors have a slightly bigger gap than is needed. Not to mention the bugs that easily get inside the cage because of the gap. I have a ceramic heat lamp on top of the cage, if I do not turn it on, I usually have temps in the 72-75 range with 83-86 humidity. If I turn the lamp on, the heat goes up to about 85-89 but the humidity drops to about 35-42, if I mist and have the lamp on, it'll fix the humidity for about 30 minutes. I'm not saying the cage is all bad, could be I'm doing something wrong. Just my two cents.

i dont think youre doing anything wrong.if there are large gaps for humidity to escape, the only solution would be to seal the gaps,or basically sit there and mist every half hour.im not against the exo terra cages.they seem really nice and i didnt mean to say for less money,i mean to say for the same amount of money.i dont think they are expensive and i think they are great for many reptiles.i just think that the higher humidity needing reptiles may benifit from a different cage.i like the acrylic cages like MD.i dont actually own one,i made all my cages myself but if i were to buy one i think id go with an acrylic.maybe someone knows of a good maker.

I love my Vision cage. How big is the snake you're getting? My worry would be if there are large gaps in the door, that you'd have an escapee.

I am looking to get a baby GTP and ETB and house them for life in one tank. I have heard nothing but bad reports about the exo-terra tanks now. My local pet store started using them as display units and they fell apart. I was thinking of getting the Boaphile plastic townhouse the measurements are 36x24x23.5 making each tank 18x24x23.5. any suggestions?

You definately dont want to house them together and you probably want to start with a smaller cage. The snake will feel more secure.

If you dont want to buy a book go through the history here. All these questions have been answered a thousand times.
